Celebrate Earth Day – Monument Clean Up, Demonstrations, Storytelling, Kiva Tour…

What: Earth Day at Coronado State Monument. This year, in anticipation of Earth Day, Coronado State Monument rangers will conduct our general spring cleaning of the site. Our focus will be on clearing away an accumulation of tumbleweeds, dead brush and other plant debris. The debris removal and disposal is being sponsored by Waste Management Inc. of Albuquerque with a dumpster on site.

Monument Rangers will also conduct hand-on demonstrations of adobe plastering and adobe wall construction. Additional demonstrations—including flint knapping, fire starting (weather permitting) and other crafts—will take place throughout the day. The Friends of Coronado will sponsor storytelling and docent-led tours of the Painted Kiva. Interpretive staff from New Mexico State Parks’ Rio Grande Nature Center will provide walking tours of the Bosque. Rio Rancho Astronomical Society volunteers will share their solar observatory with the public. As well, the Museum of New Mexico’s Van of Enchantment will be on site.

Who: Everyone is welcome to enjoy the usually gorgeous spring weather, but visitors are encouraged to volunteer to help move the debris into the Waste Management dumpster.

When: Saturday, April 16, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
